The Takken Travel Award provides women geoscience students with support to help defray travel, lodging, registration fee, and other expenses associated with the presentation of the awardee's research at a national or international professional geoscience meeting other than the Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America.

This travel award is named for Suzanne Takken (1925-1997), an avid traveler and strong supporter of women in geoscience. Suzanne spent a long career in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, as a petroleum geologist. She served terms as president of AWG (1989-1990) and director of the AWG Foundation (1996-1997).

AWG Maria Luisa Crawford Field Camp Scholarship – Due Feb 14

This program encourages promising young women who pursue geoscience careers through attendance at field camp. Two $750 scholarships are awarded annually through a competitive process. The applicant must be a full-time student who is pursuing a undergraduate degree in the geosiences (geology, geophysics, geochemistry, hydrology, meteorology, physical oceanography, planetary geology, or each science education) at an accredited college or university AND must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Photos needed: for the Pardee Session Spotlight on Positive, Diverse Female Role Models 

GSA and AWG are looking for photos of women working in the field as part of their Pardee Keynote Symposia “P2. Spotlight on Positive and Diverse Female Role Models” which will be held at the GSA Connects 2023 Meeting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, 17 October, from 1:30 PM through 5:30 PM. Our goal is to demonstrate that there are diverse females working in the geosciences worldwide. The photos will be shown in the session (which will be live streamed), and in the Women in Geology Mentor Program Reception after the session, to illustrate to the next generation the depth and breadth of female geoscientists. To be a part of this endeavor, please email two .jpg photos (500px L x 500px W) cropped to a square to diverse.geos2023@gmail.com. This trip, offered by the AWG Pacific NW Chapter but open to all AWG members, will explore the south and north sides of Mount St. Helens and loop around the east side, weather and road conditions permitting. We’ll spend 3 nights on the south side, then 2 nights at the on the north side of the mountain. Our leaders will be Carolyn Driedger and Dr. Melinda Brugman. We’ll have evening presentations, special guests, and a variety of activities (including several hikes) during the days. Registration will be through the AWG Online Store starting February 23. The price is $625 for non-student AWG members and $325 for student AWG members. This includes accommodations and food, but not transportation.
