Annual Outstanding Student Awards Reception and Dinner (early Spring)

The goal of the student awards program is to recognize and honor outstanding geoscience students from regional colleges and universities. AWG members are seated among the students and guests to encourage networking, exchanging information on balancing family needs with challenging careers, and enhancing professional growth. Over the many years (since 1982) that the Laramide Chapter has held this event, many recipients of the award have joined AWG or written to thank the chapter for recognizing them and making them feel appreciated.

Science Fairs throughout our region (January to April)

Although the Laramide Chapter serves a large portion of the Rocky Mountain Region (Colorado, New Mexico, South Dakota, and Wyoming) this function serves the Denver Metro area, the Colorado Springs Metro area, and the Northern Colorado district and city science fairs, and both the Colorado and the Wyoming State Fair exclusively. Nominations are solicited for volunteers from all over Colorado, but the majority of women volunteers come from the Front Range of Colorado. Historically, our chapter has sent at least two to three dedicated science fair judges to any district or state fair where the volunteers felt they were able to provide judges for the special category awards that AWG Laramide Chapter provides. The target group is all female science fair participants in the categories of earth science, environmental science, chemistry, physics, and space science. The goal of this project is to stimulate and encourage female science fair participants to enjoy, learn, and study in more detail any of the geosciences. The Laramide Chapter intends to continue the tradition of providing volunteers for any science fair the volunteers which to judge and to maintain visibility at the largest science-based public interaction event the chapter does.

Rocks and Roles at Dinosaur Ridge Morrison, CO(every October)

The goal of this project is to stimulate and encourage Girl Scout participants to enjoy, learn, and study in more detail the geology of “everyday” Colorado. The Laramide Chapter intends to continue the tradition of providing volunteers for the event and to maintain visibility at the largest general non-science public interaction event the chapter does. This function serves the Denver Metro area exclusively. Nominations are solicited for volunteers from all over Colorado, but the majority of women volunteers come from the Front Range of Colorado. Historically, our chapter has sent at least five members as volunteer guides for the Rocks and Roles day. These volunteers are in place to answer questions and inform Girl Scouts aged eight to eighteen on the geology and paleontology of the Dakota HogBack near Morrison Colorado.

Want to join us as a volunteer or just to have some fun on a beautiful Colorado Saturday?

The name Red Rock comes from the proximity of the numerous parks and monuments to Southern Utah University that contain red rocks and formations. Our goal is to motivate women to get involved in the geosciences, as well as educate students, geologists, and the public about the wonders of geology in our national parks and how women play a part in the study and preservation of the parks.

The Geoscience Research Scholarship - The award criteria applies to both undergraduate and graduate women students at Utah universities. The Research Scholarship will reimburse up to $1,000 per individual for meeting and travel expenses to present a research paper at a regional or national professional meeting.

Outstanding Geoscience Female Undergraduate Award - This award is intended for a woman who is considered outstanding by a nominating geoscience professor at a Utah university. Thus, faculty and instructors play a key role to acknowledge top performance with a $750 check.

Applications for these awards are typically due in early March. Occasionally, if funds are available, a Research Scholarship may be awarded in the fall. More information on these scholarships can be found here: http://www.awg.org/EAS/scholarships.html
