Dr. Margaret Leinen, Director for Geosciences at NSF, will be giving an AWG-sponsored lecture entitled "21st Century Geoscience Education: Can We Meet The Challenges?" at the Geological Society of America Meeting, Sunday November 12 at 1:30 pm. An abstract for her talk is available.

Job Hunting in the Geosciences:

The Association for Women Geosciences (AWG) is sponsoring a free job-hunting workshop at the upcoming Geological Society of America (GSA) annual meeting in Reno from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 12, 2000. The workshop will be held in Carson 1 at the Reno Hilton.

Learn the job hunting skills necessary to survive in today's changing and challenging job market. These skills may be applied to jobs in government, industry, and academia. Topics include:

  • How to use two methods to seek employment opportunities: searching for advertised jobs in your area of specialty and networking for the hidden job market
  • How to network through professional organizations as well as through casual contacts
  • How to write a resume and c.v. that will get you an interview (AWG has an excellent, moderately-priced resume-writing workbook for geoscientists available.)
  • How to develop interviewing skills that will differentiate you from the competition

Limit: 75 participants

"In tracing the adventures of her unusual heroine, the tiny young geochemist Dr. Tina Arenas, Gaines takes complex scientific hypotheses and translates them into a believable and riveting saga of one woman's quest for scientific truth. .Gaines convincingly peoples her world with vividly depicted characters..Skillfully written.deftly plotted. unexpectedly compelling." --Booklist

"This remarkable book rewards us with a deeper appreciation of geology and oceanography at the same time that we're engaged with a young woman scientist's personal and ethical dilemmas.... With this particular blend of fiction and science Susan Gaines comes thrillingly close to inventing a fascinating new genre." --Jean Hegland, Author of Into the Forest

"Gaines, who has degrees in chemistry and oceanography, has boldly built the novel around challenging scientific theories...her use of complex concepts and true-to-life practice is inspired." --Thomas Christensen, The San Francisco Chronicle

"Set in the early '80s at an oceanography institute in Northern California, Carbon Dreams follows the adventures (scientific and otherwise) of Dr. Tina Arenas, a young geochemist whose research into climate variations in the distant geological past yields unexpectedly modern implications. Her findings yank Arenas rudely out of the ivory tower and thrust her into the growing controversy over global warming." -- The Northern California Bohemian

"At last, a book that integrates authentic scientific inquiry with the character-driven magic of good literary fiction. In her remarkable debut novel, Susan Gaines fascinates with her lucid understanding of ancient geological mysteries, while simultaneously engaging us with the all-too-human, often paradoxical world of modern-day academia. A captivating story that places romantic love side-by-side with the love of sublime ideas." --Frederick Reiken, Author of "The Odd Sea" and "The Lost Legends of New Jersey"

"Carbon Dreams is more than a novel, it's also an education in earth science. To read it is to be carried deep into the mind of a young scientist, and just as deep into the mysteries of global warming phenomena past and future." --Louis B. Jones, Author of "Ordinary Money," "Particles and Luck," and "California's Over."

"No contemporary novelist I know of makes science sexier. " - Jonah Raskin, The Press Democrat
