1)  AWG ANNOUNCES 2010 OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR AWARD

The AWG established the Outstanding Educator Award in 1988 to honor well-established college or university teachers who have played a significant role in the education and support of women geoscientists both within and outside the classroom.  Examples of support include encouraging women to enter and continue in a geoscience career, providing opportunities for field and laboratory experience, and serving as a positive role model.

The recipient of AWG’s Outstanding Educator Award for 2010 is Dr. Susan Lozier.  Dr. Lozier is a Professor of Physical Oceanography and Chair of the Division of Earth and Ocean Sciences at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.      Congratulations!

Full details will appear in the next issue of Gaea.

2)  JOINT PROWESS AND IRC TECHNICAL SESSION AT AAPG ICE IN CALGARY

A joint PROWESS (Professional Women in Earth Science Committee) and International Regions Committee (IRC) session will be held at the AAPG International Conference and Exhibition (ICE) in Calgary this year.  It will take place at the TELUS Convention Centre, South Building, Upper Level, Glen 203/204 at 08:00-11:25 on Wednesday 15th September.

Topic: The Value of Diversity in Leadership - Global Perspectives

Synopsis: Organizations recognize that diversity of thought contributes to innovation, and diversity among employees helps make that happen. In this forum a dynamic group of international speakers will review and discuss the experiences of companies in discovering and documenting the added value of cultural and gender diversity in their leadership ranks. In addition, speakers and attendees will discuss the obstacles to having diverse leadership and the means to overcome these obstacles. Panelists from each of the AAPG Regions will present a wide range of views. This forum will be convened jointly by PROWESS and the International Regions committee.

3)  GEOSCIENCE SALARIES INCREASE BY 3.1% BETWEEN 2008 AND 2009

Despite the U.S. economy's downturn, geoscience salaries increased by 3.1 percent between 2008 and 2009, which is slightly more than the salary growth for other science occupations (2.1%) and for all U.S. occupations (2.8%).  In 2009, the top geoscience salaries were for management positions (Natural Science Managers: $127,000, Engineering Managers: $122,810), petroleum engineers ($119,960), and geoscientists (excluding hydrologists and geographers) ($92,710). 4)  CALLING WOMEN IN PLANETARY SCIENCE

Do you work or study in the field of planetary science?  If so, consider being one of the Women in Planetary Science blog’s 51 Women in Planetary Science .  To participate, send Susan Niebur (susanniebur@nieburconsulting.com ) the abstract of a recent publication and agree to answer a few fun questions.  Consider participating, both for yourself and other women in the field.

ADVANCED TECHNIQUES FOR AQUIFER TEST ANALYSIS

A One-Day Workshop to be Presented by Glenn M. Duffield, HydroSOLVE, Inc. at the Arizona Hydrological Society Annual Symposium in Tucson, AZ on September 1, 2010

Derivative Analysis and Diagnostic Plots for Enhanced Pumping Test Interpretation
8 am to 11 am

Despite its first appearance in the petroleum engineering literature nearly 30 years ago, derivative analysis, a powerful diagnostic tool for the identification of flow regimes, aquifer boundaries and more, has received surprisingly little attention from groundwater scientists and engineers in the interpretation of pumping tests.  Learn how to put these diagnostic methods to work for you in the analysis of your next pumping test.

Hands-On Computer Exercises
11 am to Noon

Gain direct experience with derivative analysis and other diagnostic methods in the interpretation of real-world pumping test data.

Agarwal Method for Recovery Analysis
1 pm to 2 pm

Agarwal (1980) developed a method for recovery test analysis that is in widespread use by petroleum engineers.  Through a simple transformation of the data from a recovery test, Agarwal’s method allows one to apply the same diagnostic principles and type curves used for drawdown analysis in the interpretation of recovery data.  The Agarwal method complements the more traditional methods for recovery tests including the Theis residual drawdown method and simultaneous analysis of drawdown and recovery data.

Hands-On Computer Exercises
2 pm to 3 pm

Learn how to use Agarwal’s method in the analysis of real-world recovery test data.

Additional Topics

MIDWEST GEOSCIENCES GROUP PRESENTS “IMPROVING THE DESCRIPTION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF GLACIAL SUCCESSIONS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AND ENGINEERING PROJECTS”
An Intensive Course Designed for Every Experience Level

Mississauga Convention Center
Mississauga, Ontario
Located about 8 km (5 miles) from Toronto Pearson International Airport

1 & 2 September 2010
(Register for Day One or Both Days)

Continuing Education Units (CEUs): 16 Contact Hours (1.6 CEUs)

The course provides a process for geologists and engineers to understand the nature of deposits and the secondary alterations that effect hydrogeologic and geotechnical properties..... plus it applies these principles to a process that allows staff to think on their feet in the field.

You will benefit by learning both basic and new concepts for unraveling subsurface complexities in glaciated terrain. Apply classroom sessions and field exercises to understand how glacial depositional environments and secondary weathering control the distribution of subsurface units, geotechnical properties and ground water movement.
