1)  SUCCESS AT AGU

The AWG booth made a successful appearance at the fall ’09 AGU meeting in San Francisco, CA.  Throughout the four-day exhibit, we greeted more than 300 visitors.  While the booth provided a nice meeting place for current members, most of the visitors were students and early-career professionals interested in joining AWG.  Notably, there was significant interest from European, Australian/New Zealand, South American, and Canadian geoscientists in developing their own chapters.  We registered thirteen new members at the booth during the week and distributed more than 100 membership forms to potential members and/or faculty wanting to pass along information to their students.  Everyone liked the option to register online.

Thank you to all the women who volunteered their time at our exhibit:  Sara Carena, Valentina Fontiveros (former minority scholarship winner!), Deborah Glickson, Eileen Kincaid, Phyl Porter, Linda Rowan, Heidi Stauffer, and Lisa Walsh.

3)  REQUEST FOR 2010 SCIENCE FAIR JUDGES (1-3-10)

AWG provides Student Awards for Geoscience Excellence (SAGE) certificates through the Society for Science & the Public (SSP), the sponsoring organization of the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), to young women whose projects exemplify an understanding of our world and its processes.  If you are interested in judging in a science fair, please contact Valerie Honeycutt (jvhoney@sbcglobal.net or 972-775-6029 - leave message) or contact the fairs directly by visiting the SSP website at http://www.societyforscience.org/isef/students/aff_fairsearch.asp and use the drop-down menu for a comprehensive list by state or country of the regional ISEF-affiliated science fairs presenting AWG SAGE certificates.  The 2010 science fair season has already started and the fairs are almost always looking for Special Awards judges!  Judging at a science fair is a very rewarding experience and you will enjoy visiting with these talented and motivated young people.

  1. The 2010 San Francisco Bay Area Science Fair is scheduled for March 22 -25, 2010.  The fair will be held in the San Francisco County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA. The participant projects will be set up on March 22, 2010 with the judging taking place on March 24, 2010. Please go to the website at www.sfbasf.org/ for information, and contact Susan Martinez at 925-842-1334 if you are interested in volunteering.
  2. The 2010 Dallas Regional Science and Engineering Fair is scheduled for February 27, 2010.  The fair will be held in Centennial Hall at Fair Park, in Dallas, TX. Please go to the website at www.drsef.org for information, and contact Dr. Simon Dalley at 214-768-2495 if you are interested in volunteering.
  3. The 2010 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) will be held in San Jose, CA on May 9-14, 2010. AWG presents three female students with awards each year at the ISEF.  AWG would like to field a team of 2-3 AWG Special Awards judges at the 2010 ISEF to present our awards.  Pre-judging is generally on Tuesday afternoon and judging with the students present is all day Wednesday, with the awards presentation on Thursday evening.  Specific judging information is available at http://www.societyforscience.org/isef/judges/index.asp

AWG members interested in judging in a local/regional science fair in 2010 or participating as an AWG Special Awards judge at the 2010 ISEF are invited and encouraged to contact Valerie Honeycutt.  Several resources are available including a "calling card", the certificate paper and certificate templates, AWG judging guidelines, and other miscellaneous information.

Judging requirements:  The ISEF requires that its Special Award Judges have a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent OR a minimum of 6 years of professional work experience in the respective category (earth science or a geology related field for the AWG award).

Judging categories: behavioral and social sciences, biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology, chemistry, computer science, earth science, engineering (materials and bioengineering), engineering (electrical and mechanical), energy and transportation, environmental analysis, environmental management, mathematical sciences, medicine and health sciences, microbiology, physics and astronomy, and plant sciences.
