1) PH.D. OPPORTUNITY AT LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY
We seek highly qualified; motivated and academically strong students with a bachelors or masters degree in geoscience or a closely related field for the Marathon Geosciences Diversity Enrichment program (Marathon GeoDE). Individuals must possess a strong desire to become leaders in a Ph.D. program that emphasizes scholarship, research, service, diversity, and mentoring. The program provides a $30,000 9-month stipend, a full tuition waiver, and additional annual support for research and travel. This program is intended to create an inclusive, respectful, and intellectually challenging climate that embraces individual diversity and enhances the participation of underrepresented groups (including but not limited to race, ethnicity, and gender) in the geosciences.
For additional information, visit http://www.geol.lsu.edu/marathongeode.html or contact Dr. Laurie Anderson at glande@lsu.edu.

2) POSITION OPENINGS
Post-doctoral scholar
Wright State University
Extreme scale computing for flow and reactive transport in realistic sedimentary architecture. Will use high-resolution, multi-scale geo-reservoir models to test theories on upscaling processes, on percolation and critical path analysis, and on stochastic modeling. Responsible for modifying and generating parallel code and designing and running experiments on a multi-thousand processor array. Must hold doctorate in an appropriate field (e.g. aquifer or reservoir simulation). Experience or high aptitude for supercomputing preferred. Based in the Dept. of Earth and Env. Sciences at WSU, and will use supercomputer facilities and interact with hydrology staff at PNNL. Opportunities for mentoring PhD students. Full-time position with annual reappointment to a maximum of three-years. Submit a curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests, and contact information for three references to: R. W. Ritzi, Jr., Professor, Earth and Env Sci., Wright State University, Dayton OH, 45435, (email: robert.ritzi@wright.edu). The review process will begin immediately for a late fall 2008 or early 2009 appointment. Submit by October 15, 2008 for first consideration. Assistant Professor in Hydrogeology
Department of Geology, University at Buffalo, SUNY
We invite applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in hydrogeology. We seek a scientist with demonstrated physical hydrogeology expertise who will complement our existing strength in this and related disciplines. Of particular interest are researchers who have field experience in characterizing watershed or regional scale systems, groundwater-surface water interactions and/or contaminant transport or remediation in geological systems.
We expect faculty to develop and maintain an innovative, extramurally funded research program. The successful applicant must have a Ph.D. degree at the time of appointment, demonstrated research publication potential, and a commitment to effective teaching. Teaching duties will include undergraduate and graduate level courses in the candidate’s specialty. More information about our department can be found at: www.geology.buffalo.edu.
Applications must be submitted through the UB Jobs website at www.ubjobs.buffalo.edu/applicants/Central?quickFind=52161 by Nov. 1, 2008, when we will begin our review of candidates. The University at Buffalo is an Equal Opportunity Employer/Recruiter.

Tenure-track position
Department of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences, Clemson University
The Department of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences at Clemson University invites applications for a tenure-track position in environmental geology or a related area to commence August 15, 2009. The position is anticipated to be filled at the level of assistant professor. The area of the candidate's research interests is open, but will complement those currently in the department, particularly sustainable energy, hydrogeology, environmental geology, and environmental engineering and science. Further information about the department can be found at www.ces.clemson.edu/eees. A strong preference will be given to candidates who are pursuing innovative research areas that cross disciplinary boundaries. Establishment of a high quality, externally funded research program is a requirement of the position.
Clemson University is committed to providing an exceptional academic experience to both undergraduate and graduate students. The candidate will therefore be dedicated to effective teaching and mentoring. Participation in innovative approaches to teaching, such as Clemson's Creative Inquiry program (http://www.clemson.edu/ugs/creative_inquiry), will be expected and the development of effective teaching pedagogy is encouraged. Candidates with an interest in teaching introductory level geology courses are especially encouraged to apply.
Interested candidates should apply electronically by emailing a cover letter, resume, detailed statement of teaching and research interests, and contact information for at least three references to Chair of the Search Committee, at eeesGeo@ces.clemson.edu. A short list of promising candidates will be contacted for additional information including graduate transcripts, and copies of representative publications prior to the scheduling of official interviews.
Review of applications will begin November 15, 2008 and continue until the position is filled.
