2) AWG ANNOUNCES A NEW GIP PROJECT FOR 2008-2009

Thanks to the generosity of the AWG Foundation, AWG is sponsoring another Geoscientist-in-Parks project designed for experienced graduate students or professionals. To apply, send CV or résumé, cover letter, and the names of three (3) references able to speak to your abilities related to the project, to office@awg.org. You are also encouraged to contact park personnel to discuss your qualifications or ask questions before applying for a position.

Please note that the deadline is very short!

Send all application materials via email (Word or PDF formats preferred) by September 30, 2008. Selections will be made as soon as possible by the parks.

Project details

PARKNAME: Saint Croix International Historic Site

STATE: ME

ALPHA CODE: SACR

POSITION TITLE: Coastal Erosion Monitoring Specialist

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The participant is to develop a monitoring program to establish baseline conditions at areas deemed susceptible to erosion. The program must incorporate techniques which can be implemented at regular intervals. Taking into account the initial need for training of park staff, the monitoring techniques should be developed so that they are easily implemented by park staff. In addition, through the use of a historical analysis of bluff retreat rates, areas that threaten park infrastructure should be identified. The information obtaining existing bluff erosion data should be incorporated into a GIS for analysis. It should be combined with additional data for use with monitoring efforts.

TIME FRAME:
Fall 2008 and/or Spring 2009. Start and end dates are negotiable. This position will require 1 to 2 weeks fieldwork and 3 weeks to write up the monitoring plan.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants should have or be pursuing at a minimum, a BS degree in geology or earth science education; applicants with all levels of advanced degrees in Geology are welcome. GIS experience needed for historical analysis. Applicants must have a valid driver's license.

HOUSING:
The park will provide housing at no cost to the participant. All cooking and dining equipment are provided. Laundry facility is available locally in the town of Calais. Applicants need to bring their own towels and bedding. Personal transportation will be needed to buy groceries, etc.

PARK GEOLOGY:
Saint Croix Island International Historic Site has several issues of potentially severe erosion hazards. There are cultural resources on St. Croix Island, and interpretive facilities on the mainland across from the island. On St. Croix Island, high bluffs composed of glacial till overlie a granite substrate. The granite protects the island on the north and west side where the glacial till occurs only as a thin veneer and is well above the water level of the river. The till layer thickens to the south and forms the high bluffs on the south and east sides of the island. Here the soft till is directly exposed to high tide river currents. Over the past several decades, erosion of the bluffs has led to natural exhumation of the remains of the island’s first settlers. Although some erosion rate analyses have been conducted for the island bluffs, existing data and information is not readily available for application to management of the park resources relative to the erosion hazards.

LOCATION INFORMATION:
Saint Croix Island International Historic Site is located eight miles south of Calais, Maine, on U.S. Route 1, and can be reached either by Route 9 from Bangor or U.S. Route 1, the coastal route from Portland and points south. More information about the park can be found at http://www.nps.gov/sacr.

NOTE TO CANDIDATES:
Most of the time will be spent in the field. Applicants must be capable of working in a northern coastal environment with variable conditions.

Join us as invited speakers from the Pacific Northwest examine questions surrounding the role water storage plays in the 21st century management of this state's freshwater resources.

  • What are the trends in demand and our region's water balance: agricultural use outlook, urban growth, fisheries preservation, changing climate?
  • Where are the appropriate roles in this State of large-scale surface reservoirs and more distributed small scale options?
  • Can our regulatory and institutional infrastructure support innovative, sustainable, and efficient storage options?
  • This year's event will be a one-day event structured around four sessions. In session 1, speakers will set the stage by describing the trends in water use from both agricultural and urban sectors, as well as climate projections. In session 2, practitioners will discuss recent experiences with surface water storage development in the State, both in the water-abundant western portion, and in the arid eastern region. In session 3, parties involved in developing and exploring groundwater storage solutions will describe their experiences and insights. Finally, in session 4, regulatory and stakeholder representatives will discuss the policy environment for present and future storage solutions.

The conference kicks off with a keynote address, and wraps up with an evening social mixer.

    5) CALL FOR EVALUATORS OF GEOLOGICALLY BASED WORLD HERITAGE SITES

Each year, as an Advisory Body to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for natural heritage, IUCN (the International Union for Conservation of Nature) is required to evaluate new nominations for the UNESCO World Heritage List. IUCN's year-long evaluation process involves seeking comments from international experts on the global importance and integrity of the nominated sites, whether they are nominated for their geological, biological or scenic values.

In the evaluation of geological sites, IUCN works closely with the International Union of Geological Sciences in order to identify expert reviewers that are interested in providing a technical, desk top review of one of the new proposals nominated for geological values. Occasionally reviewers are asked to participate in actual on-site evaluations.

Your volunteer input as an IUGS reviewer into IUCN's evaluation process will contribute to the conservation of globally outstanding geological heritage as well as to IUCN's efforts to maintain the credibility of the World Heritage Convention by providing high quality technical advice to the World Heritage Committee.

All IUGS reviewers will be provided with electronic access to the nomination files, and guidelines and a "checklist" on how to review the nominations. All comments, whether short or long, general or detailed, are welcome and are critical to IUCN's evaluation process. Finally, all comments will be treated as confidential.

This year IUGS reviewers have been asked to assess 6 candidate submissions.

If you would like to be added to the IUGS database of evaluators please contact the IUGS Secretary General (pbobrows@nrcan.gc.ca) immediately with full details regarding your contact coordinates (email, mailing address, telephone, etc.) and a clear indication of your particular area of geo-specialization.
