^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ AWG E-MAIL NEWS 2008-14 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ CONTENTS 1) AWG OFFERS TRAVEL FUNDING TO VISIT US CONGRESS ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Thanks to everyone who contributed to this issue of E-mail News ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ 1) AWG OFFERS TRAVEL FUNDING TO VISIT US CONGRESS The AWG Foundation will provide funding for AWG members to attend the first Geosciences Congressional Visits Day (Geo-CVD) in Washington, DC sponsored by the American Geological Institute (AGI) and several other geoscience societies. AWG members will join members of AGU, GSA, and other geosocieties in this two-day event on September 9 and 10, 2008 to raise visibility and support of the geosciences at the congressional level. Among the participating groups, AWG will be the only society to bring the unique issues of women geoscientists to the attention of Congress. The first day will be devoted to learning about how Congress works, the current state of the budget process, and how to conduct a congressional visit. The second day will be spent visiting with members of Congress. AWG’s specific goals in sponsoring member travel to Geo-CVD are to: 1) Deliver a unified message from AWG to the US Congress regarding the needs of women in the geosciences;2) Educate and involve AWG members in federal policymaking; (The goal is NOT to lobby Congress for specific legislation. Participants may not discuss current or future legislation with members of Congress or their aides.) Geo-CVD provides a terrific opportunity for anyone who is remotely interested in the public policy process and is sure to have an impact in Congress. This event is a perfect introduction to policy making for scientists, and can lead to positive, long-term working relationships with Congressional staff, who may not have the expertise needed to understand science-based issues. AWGF will cover travel and accommodations for selected AWG members to participate in Geo-CVD. Due to the limited amount of funding, it is envisioned that two AWG members – one from the east coast with relatively easy access to Washington, DC, and one from another part of the country – will be selected. However, depending upon the level of interest and the ability of interested members to raise additional funds, any number of AWG members could participate. Last year, we stretched the funding to support six AWG participants. Participants will be expected to share hotel rooms, to cover a portion of their expenses (at a minimum, meals and incidentals), and to contribute to a Gaea article describing the experience. Priority may be given to members who reside in Congressional districts represented by female Senators or Representatives who have leadership roles in Committees that address the status of women in the geosciences. If you would like to attend Geo-CVD, please email to Laurie Scheuing (lscheuing@qeallc.com) or Debbie Hanneman (hanneman@jeffersonvalley.net) by August 15, 2008 explaining your interest. Please include a brief statement of your interest in Geo-CVD; a rough estimate of your travel costs; your contact information, including daytime, evening, and weekend phone numbers; and the names of your Senators and Representative, the committees on which they serve, and their relevance to the AWG mission. Please help us make the first Geo-CVD a success and convey the value of the geosciences to policymakers. A positive visit from geoscientists and constituents about the importance and value of physical science research and education is sure to make a significant impact. AGI's Government Affairs Program tracks geoscience legislation and geoscience funding and tries to facilitate communications between policymakers and geoscientists. This unique scholarship opportunity offers: · Master’s degree programs in geosciences for applicants with at least a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, engineering, geography, geosciences, mathematics or physics. All applicants for The Middle Eastern Scholars Program must be a citizen of Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia or the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) One position will be in the broad area of sedimentary geology/stratigraphy, the other in low-temperature geochemistry (including, but not be limited to, the fields of environmental geochemistry, biogeochemistry, paleoclimatology, and isotope geochemistry). Emphasis will be placed on the potential of the applicants to establish a successful, externally funded research program that complements existing strengths in the department including glaciology, hydrogeology, geophysics, climate modeling, economic geology, geoscience education, and tectonics. We also encourage interactions, particularly for the position in low-temperature geochemistry, with researchers and faculty in other units on campus, such as Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering; Agronomy; Chemistry; Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering; Ecology and Evolutionary Biology; Natural Resources Ecology and Management; the Iowa State Water Resources Research Institute; the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture; and the National Soil Tilth Laboratory. A commitment to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels is also essential. Information about the Department appears at: http://www.ge-at.iastate.edu/. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. by the time of appointment. All applications must be submitted electronically at www.iastatejobs.com (search vacancy ID#’s 080555 and 080556). Please be prepared to enter or attach a letter of application including concise teaching and research statements, curriculum vitae, and the names, addresses, e-mail addresses, and phone and fax numbers of at least three references. Any additional application materials may be mailed to: Carl E. Jacobson, Chair, Department of Geological and Atmospheric Sciences, 253 Science I, Iowa State University, Ames, IA 50011-3212. The positions will remain open until filled. Full consideration will be given to those applications received by November 7, 2008. We encourage applications from minorities, women, veterans, and persons with disabilities. Iowa State University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. * * * * * * * * * * American Geological Institute (AGI) Geoscience and Public Policy Spring Internship The American Geological Institute's (AGI) Government Affairs Program seeks outstanding geoscience undergraduate or graduate students with a strong interest in federal science policy for a semester-long internship. Representing the geoscience community in Washington DC, the program actively works with Congress and federal agencies to foster sound public policy in areas that affect geoscientists, including water, energy, and mineral resources; geologic hazards; environmental protection; and federal funding for geoscience research and education. Applications for the spring semester are due by October 15, 2008.
