1) REQUEST FOR 2007 SCIENCE FAIR JUDGES

AWG provides Student Award for Geoscience Excellence (SAGE) certificates
through Science Service, the sponsoring organization of the International
Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), to young women whose projects exemplify
an understanding of our world and its processes. As the AWG
point-of-contact for Science Service, fair directors often contact me with
requests for science fair judges. In addition, some non-ISEF fairs also
contact me for judges or award certificates. I would like to share
information concerning several fairs searching for judges from the AWG
membership. Please contact any of the fairs listed below directly, or
contact Valerie Honeycutt (jvhoney@sbcglobal.net or 972-989-1583 to find out
how you can help! Thanks!

judges to present the AWG SAGE certificates at their fairs. If anyone in
your Chapter might be interested in participating as a judge, or if your
Chapter is interested in sponsoring an additional award at a local fair,
please contact Valerie Honeycutt at jvhoney@sbcglobal.net or 972-989-1583
for affiliated local fair information in your area. You can also visit the
Science Service website for more information or a list of their regional

2) WANTED: CITIZEN SCIENTISTS.

2007 Citizen Science Paper Competition is fast approaching and here are the
TOP FIVE reasons YOU should submit YOUR work!!

1. Share your passion for addressing the world's toughest challenges
through sound science.
2. Join the SustainUS delegation to the 15th UN Commission on Sustainable
Development in
       New York City.
3. Present your work and communicate the importance of youth involvement
to international
       decision-makers.
4. Get published in the online journal CITIZEN SCIENTIST.
5. Start a relationship with the premier youth-run network for
sustainable development,
       SustainUS!

The CITIZEN SCIENTIST online journal honors young people in the United
States who are enriching public dialogue with innovative, scientific
approaches to sustainable development.

The SustainUS Citizen Science Technical Board (SCSTB) is accepting short
scientific papers or review articles written for a non-scientist audience on
natural or social science topics related to the economic, social,
technological, or environmental dimensions of sustainable development
addressed by this year's United Nations Commission on Sustainable
Development. Papers need not describe original research, though original
research is welcome and encouraged.

The Board will select the best articles for publication in CITIZEN
SCIENTIST. Authors of winning papers will present their work at the
Commission on Sustainable Development. SustainUS will be joined by the US
State Department in recognizing your leadership and insight upon
publication.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis from January 1, 2007 to
February 15, 2007. Please send all Paper Submissions and questions about
the competition to: CitizenScience@SustainUS.org.

Please visit us on the web for more information: www.sustainus.org.

4) POST DOCTORAL OPPORTUNITY

As part of a NSF ADVANCE grant, the University of Illinois at Chicago will
be hiring 5 people for a two-year postdoc program at UIC for the STEM
departments (Biology, Chemistry, Math, Earth and Environmental Sciences,
Physics, and six Engineering Departments). This fellowship is designed to
help women scholars, particularly members of underrepresented groups,
prepare for faculty positions at UIC or other academic institutions. All
postdocs must be either US citizens or residents (NSF rule).

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at UI Chicago
(http://www.uic.edu/depts/geos) would be pleased to host one or more
postdocs. More information about the program is at
http://www.uic.edu/orgs/wise/wise_post-docs.htm, and an application is
downloadable from that website. Because the postdocs start in August 2007,
for fullest consideration applications are requested by January 16, 2007.
Please contact Carol Stein with any questions.
