1)	USGS TO HOST CONGRESSIONAL BRIEFING: HOW SCIENCE CAN HELP REDUCE
AMERICA¡¯S RISK FROM FLOODS

Flooding is the most frequent natural disaster, costing about $6
billion in losses annually and threatening lives and property in every state.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) operates a nationwide streamgage
network that is critical to saving lives and mitigating flood damage.
Streamgages are structures located beside rivers or streams that provide
information for a variety of purposes ¨C from flood forecasting to
detecting changes in streamflow.

"For more than a century, the USGS has played a key role in better
understanding the nature of floods ¡ª their causes, effects and hazards,"
said Sen. Pete Domenici (R-NM), chairman of the Senate Energy and
Natural Resources Committee. "Monitoring the water level and flow of the
nation¡¯s rivers and streams, coupled with the long-term data collected by
the USGS streamgaging network, enables communities to prepare for and
react to floods. This information helps us make decisions that mitigate
losses from future floods."

The USGS will host a congressional briefing about efforts to detect,
monitor and prepare for floods nationwide. For more information on
attending, go to http://www.usgs.gov/solutions

2) SCIENCE & ENGINEERING VISUALIZATION CHALLENGE: CALL FOR ENTRIES

Science and Engineering¡¯s most powerful statements are not made from
words alone.
When the left brain collaborates with the right brain, science emerges
with art to enhance communication and understanding of research
results¡ªillustrating concepts, depicting phenomena, drawing conclusions.

The National Science Foundation and Science, published by the American
Association for the Advancement of Science, invite you to participate
in the fourth annual Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge.
The competition recognizes scientists, engineers, visualization
specialists, and artists for producing or commissioning innovative work in
visual communication.

Award categories: Photographs, Illustrations, Interactive Media,
Non-Interactive Media and Informational Graphics.

Winners in each category will be published in the September 22, 2006
issue of Science Magazine and Science Online and displayed on the NSF
website.

Entry Deadline: May 31, 2006

Complete Entry Information:
