1) FALL INTERNS NEEDED
AGI is seeking outstanding geoscience students with a strong interest in federal science policy for a fourteen-week geoscience and public policy internship in Fall 2004. Interns will gain a first-hand understanding of the legislative process and the operation of executive branch agencies. They will also hone both their writing and Web publishing skills. Stipends for the semester internships are funded by a generous contribution from the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Applications must be postmarked by April 15, 2004. For more information, please visit www.agiweb.org/gap/interns/internse.html.

2) NEW PUBLICATION FROM AGI: MEETING CHALLENGES WITH GEOLOGIC MAPS
ALEXANDRIA, VA. Geologic maps are our most important and complete compilation of information about the planet on which we live, and we cannot understand Earth without them. We use geologic maps and the fundamental information they provide in many ways. Meeting Challenges with Geologic Maps presents a variety of examples of how geologic maps are helping to delineate fragile habitat and ecosystems, protect against natural hazards and find needed resources. Meeting Challenges with Geologic Maps, a richly-illustrated, 64-page book recently published by the American Geological Institute, provides an overview of the nature, production and interpretation of geologic maps, along with 16 key examples demonstrating the application of geologic mapping to addressing societal issues.
Intended for educators, policy-makers, and the general public, Meeting Challenges with Geologic Maps is written clearly and concisely and contains many photographs and graphics of natural phenomena and their corresponding representation on a geologic map ? fully illustrating the application of geologic maps to problem solving.
Meeting Challenges with Geologic Maps was produced by the American Geological Institute in cooperation with the Association of American State Geologists, Geological Society of America, National Park Service, and the U.S. Geological Survey.
Meeting Challenges with Geologic Maps is the seventh publication in the AGI Environmental Awareness Series and was prepared under the sponsorship of AGI's Environmental Geoscience Advisory Committee with support from the AGI Foundation. The objective of the Environmental Awareness series is to promote better understanding of the role of the earth sciences in all aspects of environmental concerns and issues. Since its formation in 1993, AGI's Environmental Geoscience Advisory Committee, co-chaired by Dr. Philip E. LaMoreaux and Dr. Stephen H. Stow, has been identifying projects and activities that will help AGI achieve this goal. For additional information about AGI's environmental geoscience program, contact Travis L. Hudson, AGI Director of Environmental Affairs, by e-mail at ageology@olypen.com, or by phone on (360) 582-1844.
