The reception is FREE and refreshments will be served. We hope that all AWG members in the region will come to the reception, and we invite all other women geoscience students, professionals from industry, academia, and government, retirees and un- or under-employed to attend. So, please, help us get out the word. Tell your students and colleagues about the reception and urge them to join us. This will be a great opportunity for networking! Hope to see you there. Note: The evening reception will replace the AWG breakfast at this section meeting. 22222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222 2) REQUEST FOR HELP FOR INFORMATION ON TENURE DENIAL Dear Colleagues: I am an Associate Professor in Public Affairs but a political scientist by training. My subfield is public law and my research has been on comparative employment discrimination law. I am compiling a list of resources for women faculty who believe they have been denied tenure or promotion because of discrimination for two purposes: to distribute at the Teleconference on Women in Higher Education her at the UM in March and to include in the Women's Caucus for Political Science newsletter. I would be particularly interested whether other women's caucuses or professional associations in other disciplines have put together anything like a guide or lists of tips--how to find a lawyer, etc. The Women's Caucus for Political Science has a Legal Defense Fund that provides $250 for women to consult a lawyer. Other than a sympathetic ear, we offer little more than that drop in the bucket. FYI: in the March 1999 issue of P/S (the magazine for the political science profession) there's an article entitled "Tenure in a Chilly Climate" about what it feels like to come up for tenure in a hostile dept. I doubt it will receive much attention outside of Poli Sci circles but it does have general relevance. Thanks, Sally Kenney 333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333 3) MEETING ANNOUNCEMENTS **GeoComputation 2000 FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS 23-25 August 2000 5th International Conference on GeoComputation School of Earth and Environmental Sciences University of Greenwich, Medway Campus Central Avenue, Chatham Maritime, Kent ME4 4TB UK Email: geocomp@ashville.demon.co.uk Further details and updates will be posted to: http://www.ashville.demon.co.uk/gc2000/index.htm Submission of abstracts is via an on-line form at: http://www.ashville.demon.co.uk/gc2000/submit.htm For email list or hot links to past conferences, proceedings and extended abstracts: http://www.ashville.demon.co.uk/geocomp/index.htm Timetable New Abstract deadline: 10 April 2000 Papers are invited on all aspects of research within the broad field of geo-spatial computation. This conference series brings together numerous scientists from different areas of research, who are interested in using the latest computational tools and techniques, or who have implemented similar computation-based approaches under alternative scenarios. It represents a conscious attempt to move the research agenda back to scientific modelling and analysis, with or without being locked into GIS! The main aim of each annual meeting is to enrich geo-scientists with a powerful toolbox of fresh ideas and methods that will permit them to examine and resolve a large range of complex, often non-deterministic, problems. It is a deliberate effort to explore the middle ground between quantitative research and computer science from an informed perspective. It seeks to demonstrate to practitioners the use of innovative up-to-the-minute enabling technologies and at the same time to provide computer scientists with a rich source of computational and representational challenges. 444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444 4) POSITION ANNOUNCEMENTS ***The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County-Curator of Invertebrate Paleontology Applicants should send a curriculum vitae, statement of interest, and the names and addresses of three references by June 1, 2000, to: Dr. Joel W.
