UNAVCO Information: UNAVCO is a university -governed consortium that is uniquely positioned to advance and support the geodetic community's scientific goals. UNAVCO has over 100 US academic members and 70+ associate members that share its mission and benefit from its programs and services. Before incorporation in 2001, UNAVCO existed for nearly two decades as the University Navstar Consortium, primarily serving geophysicists and geodesists who study tectonic deformation using high-precision GPS technology. Over the past decade, UNAVCO’s scope has expanded significantly, serving new science communities – including those who focus on the deformation of ice sheets and glaciers, Earth’s response to ground water, sea level, and other aspects of the hydrosphere, and imaging the structure of the atmosphere. Methods available to the science community and supported by UNAVCO have expanded to include many new geodetic tools: mm-level global GPS geodesy and streaming high rate GPS observations; borehole strain meters and seismometers, and geodetic imaging using LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging ) for Airborne Laser Swath Mapping, InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar), and Terrestrial Laser Scanning. UNAVCO is also active in developing web services and cyberinfrastructure. GPS is finding new applications in a frequency range of ground deformation that used to be the sole provenance of seismology, by moving from one solution per day to one solution per second, with high precision. UNAVCO's role in these areas is part of a strategy to meet the future needs of the science community.
