DEPARTMENT CHAIR, DEPARTMENT OF GEOSCIENCES, UNIVERSITY OF AKRON, AKRON OHIO

The Department of Geosciences at the University of Akron invites applications from dynamic individuals for the position of Department Chair. We seek an academic leader who will help the department make major contributions to the university's Vision 2020 Strategic Plan by ensuring student success and enhancing its research performance. The department's 10 faculty currently serve 38 M.S. students and more than 130 undergraduates majoring in geology, geophysics, engineering geology, environmental science, geographic information systems and geography. There are opportunities to supervise Ph.D. students through collaboration with the Integrated Biosciences Program, Department of Chemistry and the College of Engineering, among others. The University of Akron is located in the Northeast Ohio region, which has a population of over 4.2 million. The economy is well diversified and the immediate Akron area is noted as the world-wide center for polymers. Eastern Ohio is currently experiencing tremendous growth in the shale-gas industry leading to new opportunities in the energy and environmental sectors.  The area offers a wide variety of artistic, intellectual, entertainment, and sports activities. The Cuyahoga Valley National Park is located minutes from campus and offers a wide range of outdoor opportunities. The city of Akron is served by Cleveland-Hopkins airport to the north and Akron-Canton Airport to the south, as well as major interstate highways.

A PhD in a field related to the earth sciences and the ability to work with and lead a department with expertise in geology, geography, environmental science and GIS is required. To qualify, candidates must have a record of achievement supporting appointment at the rank of professor with tenure at The University of Akron. In addition, applicants must have a record of effective leadership in an academic and/or research setting; demonstrated ability to maintain a substantial externally funded research program; and excellent inter-personal and communication skills. Preference will be given to candidates who are dedicated to excellence in research and teaching; have a background in interdisciplinary research collaboration; complement existing departmental specialties and have prior academic administrative experience. Salary and start-up package will be commensurate with experience.
