REQUEST FOR 2012 SCIENCE FAIR JUDGES
AWG provides Student Awards for Geoscience Excellence (SAGE) certificates through the Society for Science & the Public (SSP), the sponsoring organization of the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), to young women whose projects exemplify an understanding of our world and its processes. If you are interested in judging in a science fair, please contact Valerie Honeycutt (972-775-6029 - leave message) or contact the fairs directly by visiting the SSP website and use the drop-down menu for a comprehensive list by state or country of the regional ISEF-affiliated science fairs presenting AWG SAGE certificates.
The 2012 science fair season is about to start and the fairs are almost always looking for Special Awards judges! Judging at a science fair is a very rewarding experience and you will enjoy visiting with these talented and motivated young people.
1. The 2012 Miami Dade STEM Expo is scheduled for Saturday January 21, 2012 at the Miami Dade College, North Campus Science Complex at 11380 NW 27 Ave, Miami, FL. Please contact Sebastian Oddone (305-995-1701) for more information or if you are interested in volunteering.
2.The Region V Science and Engineering Fair is scheduled for February 10, 2012 at the McNeese State University Campus, Recreation Building at 4150 Vernon Street in Lake Charles, LA. Judging is 9-noon with the Award Ceremony about 5 pm. Please contact Judy Reeves at 337-302-4830 for more information or if you are interested in volunteering.
3. The 58th North Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair is scheduled for March 8, 2012 at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, AL. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Please contact Jacob Kerstiens (256-824-6877) for more information or if you are interested in volunteering.
4. The Northeast Georgia Regional Science Fair is scheduled for Friday February 24, 2012 in Athens, GA. Please contact Ken Riddleberger for more information or if you are interested in volunteering.
5. The Central Texas Science and Engineering Fair is scheduled for Friday February 28-29, 2012 in the Student Recreation Center on the Texas State Technical College Campus in Waco, Texas. Special awards judging is 4-7 pm on Tuesday February 28 with the Award Ceremony at 9:30 am on February 29. 6. ScienceMONTGOMERY, the Montgomery County Science Fair is scheduled for March 16-18, 2012 in the Reckord Armory Building at the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland. Please contact Ellen Dickstein Kominers for more information or if you are interested in volunteering.
7. The 2012 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) will be held in Pittsburgh, PA on May 13-18, 2012. AWG presents three female students with awards each year at the ISEF. AWG would like to field a team of 2-3 AWG Special Awards judges at the 2012 ISEF to present our awards. Pre-judging is generally on Tuesday afternoon and judging with the students present is all day Wednesday, with the awards presentation on Thursday evening. AWG members interested in judging in a local/regional science fair in 2012 or participating as an AWG Special Awards judge at the 2012 ISEF are invited and encouraged to contact Valerie Honeycutt. Several resources are available including a "calling card", the certificate paper and certificate templates, AWG judging guidelines, and other miscellaneous information.
Judging requirements: The ISEF requires that its Special Award Judges have a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent _OR_ a minimum of 6 years of professional work experience in the respective category (earth science or a geology related field for the AWG award).
Judging categories: behavioral and social sciences, biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology, chemistry, computer science, earth science, engineering (materials and bioengineering), engineering (electrical and mechanical), energy and transportation, environmental analysis, environmental management, mathematical sciences, medicine and health sciences, microbiology, physics and astronomy, and plant sciences.
