AWG provides Student Awards for Geoscience Excellence (SAGE) certificates through the Society for Science & the Public (SSP), the sponsoring organization of the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), to young women whose projects exemplify an understanding of our world and its processes. If you are interested in judging in a science fair, please contact Valerie Honeycutt (972-775-6029 - leave message) or contact the fairs directly by visiting the SSP website and use the drop-down menu for a comprehensive list by state or country of the regional ISEF-affiliated science fairs presenting AWG SAGE certificates.

The 2013 science fair season is about to start and the fairs are almost always looking for Special Awards judges! Judging at a science fair is a very rewarding experience and you will enjoy visiting with these talented and motivated young people. Updates for 2013 click here.

1.The Long Peak Science and Engineering Fair is scheduled for Tuesday February 19, 2013 from 8:30 am 3:00 pm at the University of Northern Colorado (UC Grand Ballrooms) in Greeley, CO. 2.The Charles County Science Fair is scheduled for Saturday March 9, 2013 in the gymnasium at the Theodore Davis Middle School at 2495 Davis Road, Waldorf, MD. Judging is 8-noon with the Award Ceremony at 5 pm. Please contact Laura Vigneault via email or call 301-934-7322 for more information or if you are interested in volunteering.

3. The 57th Annual USC Central South Carolina Region II Science & Engineering Fair is scheduled for Friday March 15, 2013 at the University of South Carolina Coliseum on Assembly Street in Columbia, SC. Judging for the Junior Division begins Friday afternoon at 1:00 pm and judging for the Senior Division begins at 6:30 pm. Dinner (box lunch) for the judges will be provided. 4.The San Juan Regional Science Fair is scheduled for March 22-23, 2013 in Farmington, NM. Please contact Becky Kerr via email or call 505-334-1702 for more information or if you are interested in volunteering.

5.The 2013 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) will be held in Phoniex, AZ on May 12-17, 2013. AWG presents three female students with awards each year at the ISEF. AWG would like to field a team of 2-3 AWG Special Awards judges at the 2012 ISEF to present our awards. Pre-judging is generally on Tuesday afternoon and judging with the students present is all day Wednesday, with the awards presentation on Thursday evening. More information is available at

AWG members interested in judging in a local/regional science fair in 2012 or participating as an AWG Special Awards judge at the 2013 ISEF are invited and encouraged to contact Valerie Honeycutt. Several resources are available including a "calling card", the certificate paper and certificate templates, AWG judging guidelines, and other miscellaneous information.

Judging requirements: The ISEF requires that its Special Award Judges have a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent _OR_ a minimum of 6 years of professional work experience in the respective category (earth science or a geology related field for the AWG award).

Judging categories: behavioral and social sciences, biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology, chemistry, computer science, earth science, engineering (materials and bioengineering), engineering (electrical and mechanical), energy and transportation, environmental analysis, environmental management, mathematical sciences, medicine and health sciences, microbiology, physics and astronomy, and plant sciences.
