TENURE-TRACK ASSISTANT PROFESSOR WHOSE RESEARCH IS IN AREA OF ENVIRONMENTAL MINERALOGY, DEPARTMENT OF GEOSCIENCES, GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY
The Department of Geosciences at Georgia State University (GSU) anticipates hiring a tenure-track faculty member at the Assistant Professor level pending budgetary approval, whose research is in an area of Environmental Mineralogy. We seek a colleague who uses analytical or numerical techniques to understand aspects of mineral behavior in natural or human environments. Possible research areas include, but are not limited to, asbestos mineralogy and toxicity; airborne or aqueous heavy metals; redox-sensitive contaminants; geomicrobiology; medical geology; sorption, and water-rock interactions. The ideal candidate will effectively use available analytical or computational facilities on campus, collaborations, and national multi-user facilities to develop a nationally recognized research program aligned with the GSU mission and resulting in extramural funding (e.g. NSF, DOE) and peer-reviewed publications in prominent journals. Departmental facilities include petrography and cathodoluminescence, XRD, WD-XRF, field-portable ED-XRF, IC, AA, ICP-MS, K-Ar/MS, and an anaerobic experimental chamber. Electron microscopy (SEM/EDX, TEM) is available through the Biology Core Facility, and other facilities are available through the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics & Astronomy. GSU also hosts powerful advanced supercomputing processors and clusters, as well as SURAgrid and World Community Grid. The candidate will teach an undergraduate course in mineralogy for geologists, share in introductory course offerings, teach a course in his/her specialty, and develop a strong record of instruction at the undergraduate and graduate level including direction of graduate student research. Ph.D. in an appropriate discipline is required, and post-doctoral experience is preferred. Some preference will be given to candidates whose research complements ongoing areas of research in the department (e.g. Community Soil Air Initiative housed in Geosciences.
